Transition Programs & Initiatives

First Generation RazorbackS

Welcome to the first-generation college student support site for the office of Transition Programs and Initiatives!

We define “first-generation” as a student whose parent(s)/guardian(s)/support system did not graduate from a four-year institution. Almost a quarter of the University of Arkansas students are considered first-generation.

At the UofA, we recognize the unique challenges and responsibility of being a first-generation student, and that is why this initiative was started in 2021.

This initiative was created to foster a sense of community among first-generation college students at the University of Arkansas and create a network that encourages students to excel and reach their full potential.

Many first-generation students may not have easy access to first-hand information about how to navigate through college, what to expect, and how best to explore opportunities and how to identify support strategies.

Our goal is to support you and your transition to the UofA. Many other students have had the first-hand knowledge of their family members to help guide them, and we want to be that person for you!

HISTORY OF NATIONAL FIRST-GENERATION STUDENT DAY

Colleges and universities across the country observe National First-Generation College Student Day annually on November 8th to celebrate students, faculty, and staff who are the first in their family to pursue a four-year undergraduate degree in the United States.

November 8 was identified as the date for the annual celebration to honor the anniversary of signing the Higher Education Act of 1965 by President Lyndon B. Johnson. The Higher Education Act was intended to help make higher education more accessible through the creation of federal financial aid programs.
