What does it mean to you to be a first-generation student/graduate?

Being a first-generation graduate is exceptionally important to me. It guides my thoughts surrounding my personal values and definition of success on a daily basis. Additionally, it serves as a positive influence for my students, family, and home community.

Why is being a first-generation student/graduate important to you?

Many see being a first-gen as a negative obstacle through a deficit lens, but I see it as a positive challenge for personal change. I have always thrived in an environment that underestimates my abilities and the college setting has let me prove that I can be whatever it is that I set my mind to. I tend to use the first-gen status as a specialized tool that allows me to break down obstacles for others that are trying to better define and make new goals for themselves as well.

What piece of advice would you give to first-generation students?

Do not be afraid to ask questions or for help as soon as an issue presents itself. Join an organization of some kind as soon as possible. Do not underestimate yourself.
