What does it mean to you to be a first-generation student/graduate?
Being a first-generation student is something to be proud of. You are making an important investment in yourself, and are positioning yourself to make valuable contributions to your family, your community, and our society throughout your career.
Why is being a first-generation student/graduate important to you?
The first-generation student journey is one that many of my own students are experiencing now. I want these students to know that, as a professor, I understand and relate to the challenges and uncertainties that can come with with being first-gen. After all, I confronted some of these challenges, myself! For me, this experience meant having to figure many things out on my own. But I did have a few key supporters who provided important advice, guidance, or support along the way. Now, in my position as a faculty member—especially as a Faculty-in-Residence at Adohi Hall here on campus—I’m eager to do the same for others. I’m here for you as a resource!
What piece of advice would you give to first-generation students?
Be your own advocate, and don’t hesitate to ask questions, even if you think everybody else already knows the answer. Usually they don’t—it’s just that many people are too afraid to ask!
