What does it mean to you to be a first-generation student/graduate?

It means I was able to realize dreams and goals that my parents didn’t have access to. It has also allowed me to provide a better life for my family so that my daughters will not face some of the same challenges I did.

Why is being a first-generation student/graduate important to you?

It is important because I feel a sense of accomplishment in completing my educational goals.

What piece of advice would you give to first-generation students?

First of all, you are just as smart and capable as any other student. In fact, in many ways you are much more capable because you are likely pursuing a degree without the same support system as students who are not first gen. This is why it is important to find a mentor on campus to help you navigate the system. Be proud of what you are accomplishing!
