What does it mean to you to be a first-generation student/graduate?

Being a first-generation graduate means I’ve overcome challenges and barriers to success that I use as a powerful experience to help others. It means I am capable of accomplishing my goals no matter the obstacles I encounter.

Why is being a first-generation student/graduate important to you?

My family is from Mexico and they have worked hard throughout their life in the U.S. They never once doubted my ability to succeed and create a better life for myself. My success is their success, and I hope to be able to give back to my family and community through my life goals, which would not be possible without a post-secondary degree.

What piece of advice would you give to first-generation students?

Being in college is not an easy task. You will face challenges and you may at times want to give up, but don’t. Use your resources (professors, support services on campus, friends, mentors, etc.), and build a network of support around you so that when you feel like giving up, you are reminded you can do this. Oh, and have fun! Don’t take life too seriously that you forget to enjoy your college experience. Work hard and enjoy this time!
