What does it mean to you to be a first-generation student/graduate?

Being a first-generation graduate means that I have had access to opportunities that others in my family did not have. It also means that I am in a position to help and advocate for others who come from a similar background.

Why is being a first-generation student/graduate important to you?

My mom worked hard to make sure that my sister and I continued our education. We both graduated from college and went on to obtain advanced degrees and now we work in higher education supporting students in their education journey.

What piece of advice would you give to first-generation students?

Ask for help. It’s okay not to know something as long as you’re willing to ask for help and use the resources available to you. There are lots of people across campus who are willing to help and want to see you succeed.
